Givens' 31-point outburst could not have come at a better time for the Lady
Raiders, who trailed for approximately 20 minutes of the contest. Givens, a
senior from Monroe (LA), procured a double/double with 13 rebounds, and added 6
steals, 2 assists, and a block.
Troy, behind season scoring leaders Amy Lewis and Kylie Morrissy, led for the
last 12:43 of the first half and for the first 4:53 of the second half. MTSU,
however, would not be denied their school record 22nd consecutive win, mounting
a 10-2 run at the end of the first stanza to cut an 11-point deficit to 3 before
halftime.
Troy scored first in the second half to increase their lead to 5, but the
Ladies in Blue went on a 12-0 tear over a two-and-one-half minute span to secure
the triumph over the pesky Lady Trojans.
Givens was not the lone double/double performer for Middle, as Murfreesboro's
own and former Riverdale High stand-out Krystle Horton tallied 14 points and 12
boards. It was the 13th double/double of the 6-2 senior's outstanding career.
Duluth's (GA) Amber Holt netted 14, while LaToya Barclay added 4
points. Jackie Pickel contributed 3 points, and Starr Orr had 2 to
round out the scoring.
MTSU is one win away from tying the all-time high for season wins of 26
set in 1982-83. The Lady Raiders finished the conference season undefeated on
the road.
Troy, a team that features 5 Australians, was led by 5-9 junior Lewis
(Hamilton, AUS) and 5-10 sophomore Morrissy (Geelong, AUS) with 15 points each.
Lewis and Morrissy are both among the top ten scorers in the Sun Belt
Conference. Danielle Realph (Avoca Beach, AUS) nailed three trifectas to score 9
points for the Trojans.
The Lady Trojans suffered their fifth consecutive setback and were
plagued by 23 turnovers. Troy hit just 11-0f-17 at the charity stripe. The
Trojans travel to Mobile to do battle with South Alabama (6-11, 12-15) on
Saturday.
Middle Tennessee shot just 37% from the field, and 1-of-12 from behind the
arc.
The Lady Raiders host Florida Atlantic University (6-23, 2-15) on Senior Day
at 3pm on Saturday. Blue Raider seniors will be recognized prior to tip-off.
Saturday is also part of Family Weekend, and will be presented by New Student
and Family Programs.
