Introducing Darius Powell

After a stellar Junior season to his credit, Foley's Darius Powell is starting to draw some interest from programs around the Southeast. He recently sat down with to talk about his offers, what he's looking for when choosing a program and his timeline for making a decision.

Darius Powell Profile

When asked what schools he currently holds scholarship offers from it's understandable that Foley, Ala.'s Darius Powell has to think for a second. One wouldn't blame him if he needed to take a deep breath, too.

"Middle Tennessee, Memphis, Florida International, the Citadel, Arkansas State, Alcorn State, UAB, Alabama A&M and Tulane," he says. "I think that's it right now."

In addition to the nine offers he already has, Powell says that he's talking with both Ole Miss and Mississippi State, too.

It's understandable that he's drawing interest from so many different schools when you take a look at his stats from 2009: 2,000 all purpose yards. 1,037 yards through the air. 987 yards on the ground. At 5-11, 175 lbs. he doesn't necessarily appear to be a Division 1 quarterback, but his speed and athleticism give him the raw talent to make it work.

"I'm definitely open to it," Powell says about the idea of changing positions at the next level. "Quarterback isn't something I'm necessarily dead set on."

Backing up that thought, he goes on to say that he's really looking at the academics of the schools vying for his commitment. Stating that his education is the priority, Powell goes on to say that he'll be looking at where he fits in academically and socially from there.

For now it seems that schools waiting to hear from him will be waiting a little longer. Powell says that he's planning on waiting until his season at Foley is over before making a decision. Still, he has his eye on a few schools early in the process:

Middle Tennessee – "It seems like a perfect fit for me. They offered me as a quarterback and Dwight Dasher has done an incredible job up there."

Tulane – "It's a huge academic school. That's one thing that really sticks out."

The Citadel – "Good school, seems to have what I'm looking for."

Florida International – "Just like the Citadel. I think it fits."
