Recruiting Update - Tanner Burch

Heading into his senior year, Tanner Burch hasn't heard from too many schools. There are several powerhouses among the programs interested in him, though.

Tanner Burch Profile

"So far Georgia Tech and Georgia have been talking to me the most," says the Savannah Christian Prep star. In addition to the premier in-state schools, Tanner has heard from Middle Tennessee, Georgia Southern, Vanderbilt and most recently Penn State. Furman has also been recruiting him since his freshman year.

"So far I've been on visits to Georgia and Georgia Tech. I was going to go to Middle Tennessee, but something came up," he adds.

Although he's listed as an outside linebacking prospect, he's a versatile player who saw time at middle linebacker, outside linebacker and tight end this past season. He might also get a look at fullback in his senior year.

"I play all over the place," he says. "At the beginning of the season, I was in the middle and then they realized I was good on the outside. I like outside a little more because I get to roam around. I get to get out there in space and get in pass coverage, which I love. I feel a little more freedom on the outside."

Tanner went on to say that he also likes certain aspects of playing inside. Roughing up the opposing lineman was the main plus to the position, which his 6-3, 220 lb. frame allows him to do. Although he's already got the size to play on many Div. 1 rosters, he is willing to sit a year in order to bulk up.

"I want to play beyond my sophomore year," he says when asked what he's looking for when selecting a university. "I can deal with sitting my freshman year and getting bigger, but I'd like to get some playing time by the time I'm a sophomore. I think I can perform at that level."

Another factor that he is considering is the academics of each school and what they have to offer as far as majors. His preferred fields of study are sports medicine or political science.

"It's kind of a toss-up right now," Tanner says of other factors. "Academics are really important, though. After that comes prestige and comfort with the coaches. If I can be comfortable with the coaches and be able to relate to who they are and what they're trying to do, the techniques they're using and coaching style then I'm definitely going to like them."
