The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders took the field on Monday to begin their 2007 campaign. It was a very hot day. According to local weathermen it was the hottest day of the year with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, but this should serve the Blue Raiders well when they face the heat in Ft. Lauderdale, FL to open the season.
Coach Rick Stockstill was somewhat pleased with today’s effort, but certainly cited room for improvement. "I thought it was a pretty good day, pretty good start.” said Stockstill. “I thought our effort was good but not great. I told them after practice we all gave decent effort but there were four or five guys who were pacing themselves and we have to get them to raise their level of standards."
Due to last year’s new NCAA rules, the players will enjoy a 5 day acclimation period before donning full gear. Today’s practice consisted mainly of 7 on 7 drills and running drills. The Blue Raiders will not participate in full contact drills until Saturday. All practices this week are open to the public before the coaching staff closes practice beginning next week.
Wide Receivers catching on: Bobby Williams had a good practice catching several passes. Patrick Honeycutt was back on the field after suffering a knee injury last year. Rod Taylor looked impressive on the first day of practice.
Joe on the go: Joe Craddock looked very crisp in Monday’s practice. The real battle is for his backup. Gene DelleDonne, Patrick Jackson, and Salin Simpson are all competing for the spot. True freshman Dwight Dasher looks to get in the mix as well as walk-on freshman Jeremy Perry.
I’ll be back: Linebacker Chance Dunleavy is back for his senior season after taking a redshirt year in 2006 due to a knee injury..
