Peach State burner has WSU offer, eyes trip

WSU OFFERS WR WITH 4.37 TIME IN 40

LESS THAN A week removed from a d-line verbal out of 'Bama, Wazzu's Mike Leach is back at it in SEC country – this time offering a three-star receiver prospect out of Georgia. The burner from the Peach State has double digit offers and told CF.C that he "definitely" plans on tripping to Washington State for an official visit.

Rashard Fant (5-10.5, 160, 4.37) out of Fayetville, Ga. said he was both thrilled and shocked to get the WSU offer on Thursday afternoon.

"I was really happy when I got the call," Fant said. "I didn't really know they were recruiting me, but it felt good to know that they've been interested in me and that I got the offer."

As a junior, Fant posted 1,419 all purpose yards and 15 TDs on offense, with 40 tackles and three interceptions on D. Fant is ranked the 107th ranked CB in the nation by Scout.com and plays both CB and WR for Our Lady of Mercy High, about 20 miles south of Atlanta. But WSU is recruiting him specifically for one position.

"(WSU) said they want me to come in and play wide receiver for them," Fant said. "They said I have a good opportunity to come in and play right away as a freshman. I like receiver a lot. It's probably my more natural position."

FANT HOLDS OFFERS from Florida State, Indiana, Utah, Kentucky, Ole Miss and others. He has official visits set to Utah (Nov. 3), Florida State (Nov. 24.) and one to Indiana in the first week of December. That leaves two open spots for officials and Fant said a trip to Pullman is already in the works.

"Yes sir, definitely," Fant said when asked if he'll officially visit WSU. "The fact that they're an up and coming program and they're trying to make noise in the Pac-12 really sticks out to me. They're in a great conference, especially for wide receivers to play well. It would be a good experience for me to visit since I've never been there before and I think I'd be able to learn a lot about the program and school."

As has been the case for several 2013 recruits interested in Washington State, Fant said the possibility of playing for Leach is another reason why the Cougars have caught his attention.

"It's really intriguing for me," Fant said on the possibility of playing for Leach. "It's great knowing that one of the best offensive minds in football is looking at me and believes I can play for him and make plays. I remember watching him when he coached Michael Crabtree and Graham Harrell at Texas Tech. He's a great coach."

Fant added that he's in no rush to make a college decision.

"I'm interested in them (WSU) and I'm going to keep talking to the coaches," Fant said. "I'm keeping everything in mind right now. I'm not committed to any school yet and I'm just trying to find the right school for me."

NOTABLE NOTES:
  • Also on the crimson offer front, WSU d-coordinator Mike Brekse likes big corners for his scheme and the Cougs have also recently offered a prospect with safety size but corner skills: Click here for the story

  • The South has become a key ancillary talent ground for Leach in his first full recruiting cycle at WSU. Three-star defensive lineman Gerald Sterling out of Aliceville, Alabama recently went crimson after this official visit to WSU this past Saturday. Also in town at the same time was Cougar target and nose tackle Rod Crayton, out of Dadeville, Alabama. The Cougs also have three verbal commitments from Texas in their 2013 class.
