Workin' for the Weekend

Orlando, Fla.'s Derik Abbott had a busy weekend. On Friday, he and his dad made the trek to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to take in the Blue Raiders Spring game. On the way back home, the duo took a detour through Jacksonville to participate in a 1-on-1 showcase. Earlier today, BlueRaiderZone tracked down the talented prospect to discuss the weekend.

Derik Abbott Profile

"I loved it. I actually thought it was a really pretty campus," Abbott says of Middle Tennessee. "I thought the facilities were gorgeous. They said they just redid the weight room and it's awesome. It's huge compared to my high school's."

The 5-11, 183 signal caller took in a whole day of activity in Murfreesboro that culminated with him watching the Blue Raider Spring game. Besides being impressed with the campus and the facilities, the Middle Tennessee offense also caught his eye.

"It's almost identical to what we run now," Abbott says emphatically. "I did talk to Coach Faulkner briefly. He said everything they do is what we do at Freedom. Quick passes, quick decisions. Getting the ball out of the quarterback's hands quickly and if not, they gotta move."

Abbott is obviously a fit for that type of offense. More of a drop-pack passer than a dual-threat, he amassed over 2,200 yards through the air in 2010 and wound up with 12 touchdown passes to his credit. Possibly more impressive than those numbers is his 60% completion rate. In addition to his efficient work through the air, Abbott also added another eight scores on the ground.

Showcase Showdown

Once the festivities had finished up in Murfreesboro, it was time to hit the road again. Sunday saw the talented prospect participate in the 1-on-1 Showcase Camp in Jacksonville. After putting on a stellar performance, he was named the top quarterback award.

His talent has already drawn interest from several Division 1 programs around the nation. Abbott says that he's been hearing the most from Pitt, South Florida and Indiana in addition to Middle Tennessee.

Abbott hasn't yet received his first scholarship offer, but if he continues to impress throughout the Spring and Summer the offers will surely start coming.
